Southern USA - April 2003

Other Notes

Week 1

Houston (TX) => Fort Stockton (TX) => Roswell (NM) => Willcox (NM) => Tucson (AZ) => Williams (AZ)

White Sands....total solitude and peace...wonderful.

Definitely a highlight

A piece of 'Americana'....Boot Hill Cemetery and Tombstone.  Amazing to think it exists in real life and not just on dodgy Westerns.

Tucson..   very picturesque and colourful, and easily walk able around downtown.

A lovely scenic drive up to Mt Lemmon...the pictures don't do it justice...but I tried anyway.

There was even snow!

Grand Canyon...  wow!

Week 2

Las Vegas (NV) => Page (AZ) => Grants (NM) => Santa Rosa (NM)

Went via the Hoover Dam - very impressive engineering, and absolutely crawling with tourists.  It must be true that this is the second biggest tourist attraction in Nevada.

Then Las Vegas.  Didn't take many pics even though there were quite a few things that were different from the last time I was here (April 1999) but mostly it was the same type of place....this time I even went on the slots etc...managed to break even just about...and passed a few hours in the process. .

This is the Venetian casino and hotel.... complete with canal and gondolas.

Some lovely scenic pictures taken during a rain storm on US89 through Zion National Park - just before I drove into a fairly major snow fall.

Fortunately the snow didn't stick.  I say 'fortunately' as I didn't have snow tyres and didn't fancy skidding round the mountainsides!

More views...taken on route Page to Flagstaff...again it's really difficult to capture the fantastic colours or textures on film.

Week 3

Santa Rosa (NM) => Lubbock (TX) => (TX) => Austin (TX)

Santa Fe.....on a sunny but windy Easter Saturday.  Great buildings and some great history.

PS. had just watched a guy panhandling with a mouse sitting on a cat's back which was on a dog's back - good gimmick and very popular.

After the showers and strong winds of the last couple of days, it turned into a lovely Easter Sunday, so I headed out and ended up at Sumner Lake where I crashed out and caught

some rays in complete isolation (except for the Park Rangers who turned out to check on me as they were worried as I hadn't moved for a while.

I was reading!

Austin was quite a surprise...not what I expected.  The downtown area is really pleasant to walk around, and the architecture rather impressive.

The Austin Lake had a 'turtle area' where the turtles could soak up the sun in safety.

Week 4

Arlington (TX) => Galveston (TX) => Houston (TX) => Home (London, UK)

The reason for staying in Arlington - Texas Rangers v New York Yankees.  (I'm a Yankee fan).

The Ballpark at Arlington was very impressive - set in some lovely landscaped gardens.

"Grassy Knoll"

Book Depository and site of 6th Floor Museum

JFK memorial Memorial at Elm Street opposite the Book Depository
The obvious destination in Dallas is where JFK was shot and the 6th Floor Museum was a great place to visit.

The skyline of Dallas - modern, with a smattering of earlier buildings.

Some views of the houses of Galveston.  I could have taken hundreds more pictures of houses.

A very pleasant Wednesday was spent at Galveston National Park beach.

Other Notes

There are so many things I saw and experienced that I haven't mentioned here, but some things should remain unsaid.  One day I might write up my travel diary for this trip, but until then, it's just a few pictures.

It was a fantastic month, complete with fabulous car (Chrysler Concorde Limited Edition) ; weather ; books and of course soundtrack.
